Poker and Money Management

If you are good at bouncing your checkbook, managing your finance, and with money in general, chances are that you’ll do great as a professional poker player. Poker is a game of skills, and bankroll management does definitely play an important part. After all, when you sit at any poker table you are actually managing your money.

So, what is considered a good bankroll to start with if you want to begin playing seriously? Even though there is no specific model, a general rule of thumb is 300 times the amount of the big bet, or 6 times the big blind in a limit game and 10 times the big blind in a no limit game.

Even when you start out right, obviously you can either win or lose. But here is where money management capabilities come in handy. A professional poker player (or I should better say a good poker player) ought to be able to calculate wins and losses and estimate whether he or she is winning in the long run. And when not winning, a good poker player should avoid losing the entire bankroll.

My 2 cents? Well, whether you are playing Texas Hold’em or Omaha, play only with money you can afford to lose. No matter how good of a poker player and money manager you are, don’t forget that lady Luck also shows up at the poker table, and as with all ladies she is unpredictable. So, have fun and play smart!
