Nutritional Benefits From Protein Sports Supplements

Posted by admin in Nutrition Management

One of the best ways that a person can benefit from a healthy diet and exercise routine is the addition of sports nutrition in the form of extra protein. Protein is found naturally in many of the foods we eat. But a person who exercises often should get one gram of protein per pound of their body weight. This presents a problem in our fast breakfast (or no breakfast) and fast food lunch lifestyles. We don’t always get the protein our body needs to benefit from our daily workouts. This needed protein can be acquired safely from sport supplements promoting extra protein.

Protein nutritional sports drinks and mixes can provide many benefits other than increasing muscle mass and body tone. Proper protein sports supplements can help your body repair damaged cells, such as repairing muscles and bones that may get damaged during a workout. Like carbohydrates, protein can give you energy throughout the day, but unlike carbohydrates, protein offers a lower level of energy that last much longer, keeping the weight off that generally comes from a high carbohydrates diet. Getting the right amount of protein, even through sports nutrition supplements, can help the body make essential amino acids as well.

One type of protein sports nutritional supplement you may see is one called whey protein. Whey comes from milk and is one of the highest quality forms of protein with a rich amount of amino acids. And unlike other forms of protein (red meat for example) whey offers protein in a low fat and low cholesterol form. Whether you just run every other day or you are a professional athlete, protein sports supplements can help increase your body’s energy and strength. Most athletes consume a protein shake of some kind before and immediately after exercise or an event to help repair and rebuild damaged muscles.

Calorie Deficit

Posted by admin in Nutrition Management

I am sure you have heard you have to build more muscle so you can burn more fat. I’m sure you have also heard that you have to put your body into extreme calorie deficit in order to lose weight. I’ll bet you’ve also been told that eating a high protein diet will make you lose weight faster.

Do not do high protein diets! Too much protein can cause kidney failure.
Be careful!

If all we had to do is burn more calories than we take in, weight loss would be easy. Why? Because most people stop eating when they want to lose weight. It works for 2-4 weeks but then all of a sudden, it stops. Your body adjusts to the lower calories. Now you have to drop your calories even further to keep losing weight. Pretty soon, you’re starving yourself.

Think about this. Let’s say your body required 1600 calories per day. If you ate only 1000 calories that would mean you would lose weight according to the theory. If that’s the case you should be able to eat all the STARCHES and SUGARS you want as long as you did not exceed 1000 calories. Let’s take it one step further. Let’s say you eat nothing but 1000 calories from doughnuts. Well, you should lose weight, right? Definitely not!

Besides getting sick you would gain weight. But why? Because the body utilizes each and every calorie you eat in a different way. The body uses calories from proteins differently than calories from starches. So the bottom line is not HOW MUCH we eat, it’s WHAT AND WHEN WE EAT! How about that! You can eat more and lose weight. The key is to eat mini-meals every 2.5 to 3 hours, keeping your body fueled and your metabolism humming.

Make sure you include vegetables at every meal and fruit in at least 3 meals. Choose whole (unrefined) grains such as old-fashioned oatmeal, brown rice or buckwheat groats and natural starches such as sweet potatoes and beans. Also, eat small portions of protein with each meal. Your portion size should equal the size of a deck of cards. As for fat, it’s best to get your fat from flax oil, salmon and other sources that provide essential fatty acids (Omega 3, 6 & 9). To limit the amount of saturated fat you eat make sure you eat skinless chicken breast and remove all visible fat. If you want an omelet or scrambled eggs, use one whole egg and 5 egg whites.

The body not only utilizes each and every calorie you eat differently it also BURNS each and every calorie differently. Your activity level will determine which calories the body will utilize for energy (protein, carbs or fat). Most people will only burn calories from the foods they’ve eaten during the day and never tap into their fat stores. In other words, they eat so they can go to the gym and burn it off; a never-ending cycle. Unfortunately, some people don’t eat enough and they go to the gym and burn off muscle proteins. They lose weight, BUT they also get flabby due to the loss of muscle tissue.

The idea is to supply your body with the calories it needs to maintain proper bodily functions, AND burn off calories from stored fat. If you over-eat, your body will store the excess calories as fat. No matter how much you exercise, you’ll still be storing fat, not losing it. If you eat too little your body will think it’s starving and hold on to its fat stores. No matter how much you exercise, you’ll keep your stored fat and lose precious muscle.

If the body’s functions are met first by supplying it with the amount calories it needs, several times throughout the day, it will rid itself of fat incredibly fast. Trust me, the human body is not meant to be fat.

Vitamins for the Recovering Alcoholic

Posted by admin in Nutrition Management

I have frequently heard alcoholics who are in early recovery remark that, “If this is what recovery is like, I’d rather go back to drinking.” Vitamin deficiencies, particularly of the B vitamins and vitamin C, may be responsible for much of the lethargy, skin irritation, memory loss and depression experienced by people who are newly recovering from an addiction to alcohol. Though these symptoms may have been ongoing while the alcoholic was actively drinking they may seem less tolerable while not under the influence of alcohol.

Alcoholics often replace food consumption with alcohol. Unfortunately, the calories gained from alcohol are what are frequently referred to as “empty calories.” That is, they are calories lacking nutrients and of little value to the body. Additionally, alcohol gets in the way of the body absorbing and using the vitamins and minerals of the food that the alcoholic does eat. The combined effect is to leave the alcoholic nutrient poor.

Individuals in recovery can benefit from a healthy diet and a vitamin regimen.* Vitamin B in general, and particularly vitamins B1 (thiamin), B3 (niacin) and B5 (Pantothenic Acid) play a role in turning sugars into energy. Pork is one of the best sources of B1, other sources include cereals and nuts. B2 can also be found in pork and fortified cereals, as well as, salmon and swordfish. Whole grains, milk, eggs, and liver are perhaps the best food sources for Pantothenic Acid.

Meanwhile, B6 and B12 play important roles in producing blood cells and the health of the nervous system. Both of these important vitamins are frequently depleted by years of heavy drinking. Good sources for both of these are meat. Additionally, B6 is found in bananas, avocados, and peanuts. B12 is only found in animal by products; however, this list includes dairy and eggs.

Vitamin C, plays an important role in keeping the skin healthy, and plays an equally important role in the health of bones, teeth and blood vessels. Deficiencies in vitamin C can also be responsible for irritability, weakness and muscle fatigue. The best and most consumed source of vitamin C in the United States is orange juice from frozen concentrate. Other sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, broccoli, potatoes and cantaloupe.

For the average American, eating a healthy diet, vitamin B and C supplements are often unnecessary. However, early in their recovery, alcoholics should seek the advice of a doctor about a proper regime of vitamins and diet. Paying attention to health matters can increase the chances of successful recovery from alcohol addiction.

Vitamin A and the Importance in Health and Disease

Posted by admin in Nutrition Management

Known as anti-opathalmic, vitamin A is essential for growth and vitality. It builds up resistance to respiratory and other infections and works mainly on the eyes, lungs, stomach and intestines. It prevents eye diseases and plays a vital role in nourishing the skin and hair. It helps to prevent
premature ageing and senillity, increases life expectancy and extends youthfulness.

The main sources of this vitamin are fish liver oil, liver, whole milk, curds, pure ghee, butter, cheese, cream and egg yolk, green leafy and certain yellow root vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, turnip,
beets, carrot, cabbage and tomato and ripe fruits such as prunes, mangoes, pappaya, apricots, peaches, almonds and other dry fruits. A prolonged deficinecy of vitamin A may result in inflammation of the eyes, poor vision frequent colds, night blindness, and increased susceptibility
to infections, lack of appetite and vigour, defective teeth and gums and skin disorders.

The recommended daily allowance of vitamin A is 5,000 international units for adults and 2,600
to 4,000 international units for children. When taken in large therapeutic doses, which are
usually 25,000 to 50,000 units a day, it is highly beneficial in the treatment of head and chest
colds, sinus trouble, influenza, and other infectious diseases. It is also valuable in curing night
blindness and other eye diseases as well as many stubborn skin disorders.

This vitamin can be
given upto 1,00,000 units a day for a limited period of four weeks under doctor’s supervision.
In a recent year-long study, huge doses of vitamin A given twice a year reduced death by about
30 per cent among Indonesian children. This has raised the hope in the fight against a significant
cause of childhood mortality in developing countries.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids: What are They, Really?

Posted by admin in Nutrition Management

“The physician who knows only medicine, knows not even medicine.”
Omega-3s are “fatty acids” that help build other fats in the body. They derive their name from their chemical structure — the “omega” end of the molecule has its first double bond in the “3″ position.
Know what that means? Do you really care what that means? Isnt fat just fat?

Scientists have found that historically the Eskimos of Greenland have enjoyed exceptional heart health despite a diet very high in fat. After some research, it was discovered that the primary source of the fat in their diet came from sea mammals, which contain high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids.

Research has uncovered a many beneficial health effects of these types of fats. They are essential for the proper development of nerves, eyes and brains in growing children. They protect against dying from a heart attack. And they have been studied for their beneficial effects on inflammatory diseases (see Dr Barry Sears Books on Omega 3 and inflamation) such as arthritis, lupus and asthma.

Three major types of omega-3 fatty acids exist. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is in plant foods such as flaxseed, walnuts and canola oils.

Eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA, and docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, are found in fish and algae, especially in fatty fish such as salmon, trout and herring.

Human milk contains all three types of omega-3 fats: ALA, DHA and EPA. (DHA is the main type needed for brain, eye and nerve development.)

The American Heart Association recommends healthy people eat omega-3 fatty acids from fish and plant sources to protect their hearts. Have you heard of this miracle?

Scientific Evidence Reveals a Diet Rich in Long-Chain
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Helps Support

A Healthy Brain

A Healthy Heart

A Healthy Immune System

Healthy Joint Movement

Healthy Kidneys

Balanced Mood and Sense of Well Being

Strength and Stamina

And Helps Maintain Cholesterol Levels that are Already within the Normal Range*

Your grandmother probably used fish oil in the form of cod-liver oil, which is rich in vitamins A and D. It was used to prevent rickets (a disease resulting in weak bones that is caused by a deficiency of those vitamins). Even though cod-liver oil is one of the most disgusting foods known to man, taking it daily was a given in many households. It turns out the reason that cod-liver oil was so beneficial was not because of those vitamins, but because of its high levels of the long-chain, omega-3 fatty acids called EPA and DHA.

EPA is a key factor for controlling insulin levels, and DHA is essential to maintain and rebuild your brain. So, Grandmother was doing an excellent job in promoting health in your parents.

Equally important, many neurological conditions such as depression, multiple sclerosis, and attention deficit disorders are linked to low levels of DHA in the diet; supplementation with fish oils rich in DHA often show dramatic improvement within a few weeks.

Dr. Barry Sears is a research scientist and creator of the world famous Zone Diet. His most recent book, The OmegaRx Zone - The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil, is the culmination of 20 years of research on the benefits of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish oil. In fact, Dr. Sears pioneered the development of pharmaceutical-grade fish oil, a highly refined nutritional supplement rich in DHA and EPA. This work continues his life long dedication to using diet to help people maintain their state of wellness.

Anabolic Steroids - A Historical Overview

Posted by admin in Nutrition Management

Anabolic steroids are a group of steroid hormones capable of increasing cell growth and division in the body. Since all steroids have anabolic and androgenic properties they are scientifically known as AAS - Anabolic Androgenic Steroids. The most commonly known natural anabolic steroid is testosterone.

The anabolic part of the metabolism is responsible for building larger molecules from smaller parts. In the body, anabolism is combined with catabolism, a process where larger molecules are parted into smaller units. The anabolic processes will build up tissues and organs in the body, including muscles. Anabolic steroids are therefore sometimes used by athletes, body builders, wrestlers and others with similar occupations to aid muscle growth. Since anabolic steroids affect a wide range of bodily functions and come with severe side effects their use is restricted in many countries and the use of anabolic steroids are also forbidden for participants of most international competitions, regardless of the rules in the home country of the participant. As mentioned earlier, anabolic steroids also have androgenic properties, which mean that they will affect the development and maintenance of masculine features in the body.

Allegedly, anabolic steroids were unintentionally discovered by German scientists during the early years of the 1930’s. They did not realize the future potential of their discovery and the study was not continued. In 1938, anabolic steroids are mentioned in a US magazine for weightlifters and bodybuilders. During the 1940’s and 1950’s physicians began to use anabolic steroids to treat a wide range of health problems. The side effects were soon discovered, but for some conditions the benefit of anabolic steroid treatment were still considered larger than the down sides. Anabolic steroids are for instance very potent when male puberty needs to be artificially stimulated in a patient. Today, testosterone is by far the most common treatment for extremely delayed puberty, but before the 1980’s synthetic anabolic steroids were used as well. Anabolic steroids will also stimulate growth in children suffering from growth failure. Today, synthetic growth hormones are used, but until the end of the 1980’s anabolic steroids were commonly prescribed. The anabolic steroids have also been replaced in the treatment of various anemic conditions, since more selective synthetic protein hormones are now available. Anabolic steroids are still used to treat patients suffering from extreme loss of muscle mass and devastating lack of appetite due to AIDS or cancer.

There are several more or less successful ways of trying to counter act the side effects of anabolic steroids. Athletes who use anabolic steroids will typically engage in vigorous cardiovascular exercise in order to work against the effects of left ventricle hypertrophy. The risk of developing gynecomastia - large breasts in men - can be lowered by the use of certain other drugs known as aromatase inhibitors and SERMs (Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators). Since anabolic steroids can cause premature hair loss, some users combine the steroids with a prescription drug called Finasteride. In the body, testosterone can be converted into DHT, a compound known to play a vital role in male hair loss. Finasteride will inhibit the conversion of testosterone into DHT, thus lowering the risk of hair loss.

Fish Oil Benefits - 7 Major Fish Oil Health Benefits

Posted by admin in Nutrition Management

Fish oil benefits? You bet! Fish oil health benefits are important and wide-ranging. Proven by numerous clinical studies, fish oil benefits range from brain health to heart health to pregnancy health.

Fish oil health benefits come primarily from the two Omega 3 essential fatty acids in fish oil — DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and to a lesser extent EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). While plant sources such as flax seed will provide the body with Omega 3 oil, the body must convert it into DHA and EFA, and that conversion can be difficult for some people or for elderly people. However, fish oil provides the body with DHA and EPA in a natural form that can easily be assimilated.

Here are seven major fish oil benefits:

1. Lowers blood triglycerides - high levels of triglycerides are known to be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

2. Helps reduce likelihood of blood clots - fish oil benefits include the prevention of blood platelets from sticking together and forming blood clots.

3. Lowers mild high blood pressure - fish oil helps lower blood pressure when it is due to high cholesterol and hardening of the arteries.

4. Reduces inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and gout - fish oil health benefits come from the DHA and EPA that reduce the amount of inflammation-causing substances.

5. Lowers risk of developing Altzheimer’s Disease - studies have found that fish oil seems to help protect the nervous system.

6. Reduces depression rates - the lack of DHA has been linked to higher incidence rates of depression.

7. Improves immune system function - fish oil benefits and studies have linked lowered risk of breast cancer and prostate cancer to the consumption of fish oil.

And there are more fish oil benefits! From lowered risk of age related macular degeneration to reducing the risk of osteoporosis to benefits for Type II diabetics, fish oil health benefits are truly spectacular.

However, there are some precautions that you should be aware of when considering your sources for fish oils. Some fish oils can contain:

* Contaminants such as PCB’s and heavy metals like mercury

* Additional additives to keep the fish oil from becoming rancid during the transporting and encapulating process

* Low DHA levels

Inferior fish oil products do exist, while at the same time fish oils are available that are harvested from pristine ocean waters. Be sure the fish oils you consume to enjoy fish oil health benefits contain high levels of DHA and EPA and are free from the heavy metals. Read as much as you can about even more fish oil benefits that provide an amazing array of health benefits.
